Eleven local athletes set to compete in 2024 Bay State Games

The 2024 Bay State Summer Games are here, with softball and baseball action kicking off this coming Tuesday while the majority of the other showcase sports get underway later in the week. 

Eleven Franklin County athletes will be competing across the Commonwealth this summer, making their respective teams via tryouts. 

Baseball and softball are the first two sports to get underway. The baseball tournament will run from July 9-11 in Malden while softball will also run from July 9-11, and will be held at Willard Park in Devens. 

Mohawk Trail’s Logan Moore and Frontier’s Grayson Loos made the West baseball roster. West opens the tournament by facing off against Central at 11:30 a.m. before taking on Southeast at 2 p.m. on Tuesday. 

Franklin Tech’s Kylee Gamache and Frontier’s Skyler Steele will be representing the West squad on the softball diamond and will be looking to bring home a gold medal after taking silver last summer. 

Gamache and Steele will open the tournament against Coastal at 11 a.m. on Tuesday before taking on Northeast at 1 p.m. 

Four Greenfield field hockey players will be competing on the West squad this summer. Riley Thayer, Gloria McDonald, McKenzie Boswell and Henley Gilstrap made the West team, which begins its tournament on July 12 at Game On Fitchburg. West opens against Central at noon on July 12 before taking on Coastal at 3 p.m. 

The West field hockey team earned a bronze medal last summer.

Three players from Frontier’s MIAA Div. 4 final four volleyball team made the West roster for the Bay State Games. Olivia Machon, Bailey Martin and Abigail Hernandez are all on the squad, with the volleyball tournament running from July 13-14 at Game On Fitchburg.

No Franklin County athletes will be competing for either the West boys or girls soccer teams. Both tournaments runs from July 11-13 at Game On Fitchburg.

The West girls basketball team, which has won gold at each of the last three Bay State Games, does not have a Franklin County player on its roster. The girls basketball tournament runs from July 19-21 at Babson College in Wellesley. 

The West boys volleyball team does not have a Franklin County athlete. The boys volleyball tournament will run from July 13-14 at Game On Fitchburg.
