GREENFIELD — The Frontier girls basketball team is rolling to open the season.

After picking up wins over Southwick and Easthampton, the Redhawks made the trip to Nichols Gymnasium to take on Greenfield Tuesday in Franklin County League North action, and it didn’t take long for the Frontier defense to take over.

The Redhawks held the Green Wave off the scoreboard for the opening five minutes of the game, building a 22-0 lead along the way.

Frontier extended its advantage to 48-8 at the half before ultimately walking away with a 70-16 triumph.

“We told the girls to execute,” Redhawks coach Dave Machon said. “They executed our actual game plan in the first half and they executed what I told them to execute in the second half.”

It’s been a tough stretch for the Green Wave to open the season, facing off with defending Div. 5 state champion Hoosac Valley in their opener before playing a Frontier team that will be in contention for some hardware at the conclusion of this season.

Greenfield coach Ben Johnson is looking for his team to learn from these two games, which he feels will help them down the line.

“You don’t get any better by not testing yourself,” Johnson said. “This was another test for us. We’ll go over it, watch the film, see what we need to improve on and work on that before we take on McCann [Tech].”
