A pair of teams that reached the 2023-24 MIAA Division 5 boys semifinals met at Messer Gymnasium on Friday.
Pioneer hosted Hoosac Valley, with the Panthers taking a 25-23 halftime lead after an Alex McClelland layup before the buzzer sounded.
It was the Panther defense that locked in during the second half, limiting the Hurricanes to nine points in the third quarter and 11 in the fourth. That allowed Pioneer to pull away with a 51-43 independent victory in Northfield.
“It was a gritty win,” Panthers coach Scott Thayer said. “We didn’t shoot the ball as well as we had the previous games. Our defense is what anchored our success tonight. For an early season game, that’s a good one.”
Kurt Redeker — who finished with nine points, five rebounds and four assists — had the job of guarding Hoosac’s leading scorer, Trevor Moynihan, and did his job of limiting the talented freshman to five points.
“Kurt did a really good job on Trevor Moynihan,” Thayer said.
Brayden Thayer finished with 20 points and four rebounds for Pioneer (4-0), Alex McClelland tallied 15 pints, six rebounds and four assists, Jackson Glazier put in five points while Ben Werner added two points in the victory.
Mahar 73, Narragansett 51 — Leading 35-24 at the half, the Senators outscored the Warriors 27-13 in the third quarter to run away with an independent victory in Orange on Friday.
