HS Roundup: Hot start lifts Mahar boys basketball past Hopkins Academy for first win

A hot start sent the Mahar boys basketball team to its first win of the season on Monday night.
The Senators led 23-6 after one quarter and cruised to a 72-29 Hampshire League South victory over Hopkins Academy in Orange.
"Nice to get a win on the board," Mahar coach Chad Softic said. "It was nice being home and the crowd was great for a Monday night before Christmas."
Jayden Delgado exploded for 25 points to pace Mahar (1-1), which led 39-11 at halftime. Lian Lopez Baez followed with 14 points and Morgan Softic tossed in eight points and seven assists to pace the hosts.
Frontier 43, Lenox 29 — The Redhawk defense locked down the Millionaires on Monday, holding Lenox to just two points in the fourth quarter to pull away with a come-from-behind Hampshire League South victory at Goodnow Gymnasium.
Frontier trailed 17-14 at the intermission but outscored the Millionaires 12-10 in the third quarter and 17-2 in the fourth.
Max Millette put in 20 points, Garrett Dredge and Alex Ellis each scored 10 points while Carter Miller knocked down a 3 for the Redhawks.
Lee 52, Athol 34 — Seven different Bears scored on Monday night, but none of them could muster double digits as Lee’s defense held Athol to just 34 points in a Hampshire League North bout at Mallet Gymnasium.

Karim Thompson led the way with eight points for the hosts, Dominik St. Andre and Brandon Adams each tallied six points while Ethan Goodwin and Oliver Johnson chipped in five points apiece in the loss.
Smith Academy 57, Franklin Tech 32 — The Falcon defense held the Eagles to just four points in the first half to pull away with a Hampshire League North victory on Monday in Turners.
Gabe Mota scored 12 points, Brody Hicks and Dylan Cullen each finished with four points while George Gutierrez, Joe O’Donnell and Nolyn Stafford each tallied three points in the loss.
Hampshire 50, Turners 40 — The Raiders saved their best for the fourth quarter.
The Thunder held a 29-28 lead going into the final frame when the Hampshire offense exploded for 22 points, Isiah Isa leading the charge with 10 in the quarter, as Turners fell in a Hampshire League North contest on Monday.
Davian Bala scored 14 points, Jackson Cogswell and Caden Williams-Senethavisouk each tossed in nine points while Alex Quezada added six points for the Thunder.
Lenox 55, Pioneer 20 — Kyler McClelland knocked down a pair of 3-pointers to finish with eight points in the Panthers’ defeat to the Millionaires in an independent contest in Lenox Monday.
Lenox led 38-6 at the half.
Natalie Rios scored four points and grabbed six rebounds while Maggie Tsipenyuk and Jaelyn Boliski each tossed in three points and grabbed four rebounds for Pioneer.
Lunenburg 3, Greenfield 2 — The Green Wave suffered their first loss of the season on Monday, falling to a tough Lunenburg team on the road.
Lunenburg (5-0) took its 3-2 lead with four minutes to play in the second period and though Greenfield put 14 shots on goal in the third period — six of which came in the final 1:26 of the game — the Wave were unable to find the equalizer.
Luca Siano got Greenfield (4-1) on the board in the first period and with eight minutes to go in the second, Jake Jurek found Jack Laurie in the slot and he buried the shot to tie the game at two.
Cooper Smith made 19 saves in the loss. Greenfield beat Lunenburg to win the state title back in 2020.
Wrestling
South Hadley 60, Mohawk Trail 23 — Wade Purington (120), Derik Pazmino (132) and Logan Moore (157) earned wins for the Warriors in a loss to the Tigers over the weekend.
FCHA results
Aiden Baldwin and Killian Connelly both found the back of the net while Andrew Quintana added an assist in FCHA 10U’s 4-2 loss to Keene on Sunday.
