GREENFIELD — A late surge from the Greenfield boys basketball team on Saturday wasn’t enough.
Hosting Wahconah, the Green Wave trailed 59-47 with under three minutes to go but turned up the heat defensively late. Jon Breor scored in the paint before Caleb Murray snatched a steal and converted on the other end, cutting the Warrior lead to 59-49 with two minutes to play.
Malik Moore then scored off a steal, Murray got to the line following a steal and made one of two before Grayson Thomas got to the line and made both. Suddenly the Wave trailed by just five points with 1:28 to go.
Wahconah’s Sam McLaughlin halted the run with a tough basket inside and Evan Alfonso iced the game with a score with under 20 seconds to play, as the Warriors walked away with a 63-57 independent victory at Nichols Gymnasium.
After a win over Drury on Thursday — one that saw Grayson Thomas hit a buzzer beater to send the game to overtime before adding a game-winning buzzer beater in the extra session — Greenfield coach Angelo Thomas said his team did not bring the necessary energy to earn a win over a tough Warrior team.
“I’ve been part of that before,” Angelo Thomas said. “You go from the emotional game like we played two nights ago and then you have an emotional hangover today. I tell the kids it has to be consistent. Our effort needs to be consistent. It can’t be really good one day then average to below average the next game. If it’s that way, we’re going to lose. If we bring energy and effort, we’ll have a chance every game.”
Breor — who entered the game 27 points shy of reaching 1,000 career points — got off to a hot start for Greenfield (2-1), scoring six points in the opening frame.
Murray drained a 3 before Grayson Thomas scored at the buzzer, though Wahconah led 14-11 after eight minutes.
