NORTHFIELD — Greenfield High School has waited a long time for its second boys basketball player to join the 1,000 point club.
Angelo Thomas became the first Green Wave boy to hit the 1,000 point mark in 1993, and while seven Greenfield girls basketball players have hit the scoring mark, no Green Wave boys have been able to6 join Thomas on the exclusive list.
Jon Breor changed that on Monday.
The Greenfield senior entered Monday’s Hampshire League South contest against Pioneer sitting at 992 career points and made sure to hit the milestone before the half.
Breor scored a basket early in the first quarter and tacked on four points early in the second quarter, leaving him one basket away. With 1:34 to go and the Wave trailing 36-28, Greenfield’s Grayson Thomas drove to the rim but his shot fell off the rim.
Breor was there to collect the rebound and put it home to make him just the second Green Wave boys basketball player to reach 1,000 points and just the ninth Greenfield player in school history to accomplish the feat.
“It’s been something I’ve been looking forward to my whole high school career,” Breor said. “I’ve been getting closer and closer. I knew I needed eight points going into the game but I wasn’t trying to force anything. We ran a play, I cut to the basket and just saw the ball sitting there. I got it and it went in. I didn’t realize for a second then it hit me. It was a great feeling.”
Breor saw fellow Green Wave players Amber Bergeron and Katie Haselton reach the milestone in recent years. Knowing how long it’s been since a Greenfield boy has done it made it all the more special.

“We saw Amber get it last year and you’ve seen a lot of girls able to get it,” Breor said. “Being the first guy to get it in over 30 years is pretty special. It’s crazy and I’m honored to be able to achieve that.”
Greenfield coach Angelo Thomas noted how long it had been since he accomplished the feat, saying he was proud of Breor for the accomplishment.
“It’s been 32 years since it’s happened,” Angelo Thomas said. “Congrats to Jon.”
Getting to 1,000 points doesn’t happen by accident. It’s taken hard work through the years, which saw Breor score 10 points as an eighth grader, 240 as a freshman, 301 as a sophomore before putting up 394 points as a junior.
That left him 55 short going into his final season with the Wave and it took him just four games to get there.
“It’s a lot of hard work every day in practice,” Breor said. “Lifting, we’re doing yoga. We do it all to try to get better. As a team we’re grinding and getting better. Individually it’s been a lot of hard work but it all paid off.”
Pioneer didn’t let the celebration go on all night, however.
The Panthers closed the half on a 5-0 run behind a 3-pointer from Alex McClelland and a basket from Brayden Thayer, giving Pioneer a 41-32 lead at intermission.
A Thayer putback at the buzzer put the Panthers ahead, 56-48, at the end of the third quarter and while Greenfield was able to keep it close in the fourth — getting the lead down to 63-57 following a Breor basket in the final minutes of the game — Pioneer made its free throws late to come away with a 70-62 victory at Messer Gymnasium.
“Two teams in the Hampshire League that are going to be competing the whole way,” Panthers coach Scott Thayer said. “It could have gone either way. Both teams play hard and aggressive. We made a few more plays tonight and came out with a win.”
Pioneer took a 22-15 lead after eight minutes and as a team, knocked down five 3-pointers in the first half to build the big lead.
Kurt Redeker was a force for the Panthers, as the senior finished with 25 points, 10 coming in the first quarter alone. Brayden Thayer scored 23 points, McClelland tallied 18 points and Jackson Glazier scored four points to go along with nine rebounds and six assists.
“Their seniors all probably scored over 20 [points],” Angelo Thomas said. “In the second half we only allowed 29 points but we gave up 41 in the first half. You aren’t going to win many games where you give up 41 in a half. We have to tighten our defense up, be mentally stronger and figure things out.”
Grayson Thomas led the Green Wave with 20 points. Caleb Murray tossed in 15 points and Caleb Thomas scored four points.
Breor finished the night with 17 points, and he felt Greenfield gave it its best effort throughout Monday’s contest.
“After I got it I brought the team in and told them let’s focus and it’s time to go win the game,” Breor said. “We didn’t but I feel like we fought hard.”
